Every Macintosh user should backup their valuable data regularly, and if possible, backups should always be secured with modern cryptographic tools. But backups have never been easy. For this reason, FullBack introduces advanced security with a simple and convenient interface to take away any excuse for failing to backup. Backups can be stored on a private TradingPost i-Network disk or on a local disk.
FullBack can also be used for general encryption. It is possibly the most secure and convenient security system of its type to be found anywhere in the Macintosh world.
OVERVIEW and INSTALLATION
FullBack is a free software add-on to TradingPost™
(http://www.highwinds.com/tradingpost.html). A subscription to
TradingPost is a prerequisite for using FullBack. TradingPost
includes 100 megabytes of remote storage space for your backups.
If your copy of FullBack did not come pre-installed with TradingPost,
then install it by simply placing the folder "FullBack ƒ" inside the
folder "TradingPost ƒ" as show below:
SECURITY
a. Files (or folders) are encrypted with private 512 bit "Blowfish" keys
using the "EnScrypt" program. These keys are unique to each backup
and are randomly generated. Highwinds Trading Company does not have
access to the encryption keys; they are created on your computer and
that is the only place where they are kept...in a separately encrypted
preference file called "BackupData".
b. Backup files are signed (digital signature) so that tampering is
immediately detectable. Digital signatures are believed to be unique
to FullBack.
c. Access to the remote server (TradingPost) is protected with encrypted
passwords..... infinitely more secure than FTP and less of a chance
that someone with malicious intent can delete or destroy your backups.
d. Randomly generated access passwords (TradingPost) which are nearly
64 bits long; trillions of times better protection than typical
human-generated passwords or than systems that use standard password
dictionaries.
e. Backups on the remote server are themselves backed up daily, and copies
are stored off the premises in a physically protected environment.
CONVENIENCE
a. Easy setup for backup. Encryption keys automatically stored in a
secure database.
b. Incremental backups based on whether the original file is modified.
c. Tight compression, using "StuffIt" technology from Aladdin.
d. An option to backup locally so that you aren't forced to back up to
your remote drive.
e. A tool to run off-hours automatic backups
FULLBACK OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
a. Make a Backup (Three Choices)
1. Immediate Backup.
Run "TradingPost" to mount your disk. Then drag the icon (or
icons) of any file or folder onto the program icon "Immediate Backup",
or doubleclick and choose. Select whether you want to make a local
or a remote backup. The program will immediately create an
encrypted backup of the item(s) in the location you have chosen
(either local or remote).
Remote backups are placed in the "Backups" folder on your remote
disk (TradingPost), and local backups are placed in a folder called
"Local Backups" inside the "FullBack ƒ" folder.
The next time you do a "Regular Backup" or "Automatic Backup"
(see below), the encrypted file will be updated depending upon
whether the original item(s) has been modified. If you do not wish
to have the item updated in the future, move it out of the "Local
Backups" folder.
2. Regular Backup.
Drag the icon (or icons) of any file or folder onto the program icon
"Make Alias", or doubleclick and choose. Select whether you want
to the backup to be stored in the "Local Backups" folder, or on your
in the "Backups" folder on your remote disk (TradingPost). The
program will set up that item for backup (make an alias and an
encryption key), but will not actually do the backup. "Make Alias"
is therefore an efficient tool for organizing your backup and file
encryption strategy..
Once you have things set up with "Make Alias", mount your
remote disk with "TradingPost", then run "Regular Backup".
The program will go through each of the items you have set up
and create your backups.
Tips:
a. For backups to be updated regularly after set-up, you must
not change the file names of the original items or move them
to another folder.
b. FullBack will operate quite efficiently if you select
files and individual folders for backup. It is not a good
idea to select entire disks or large folders that contain
other folders.
c. To remove an item from your backup schedule, open up
the "Aliases" folder, and delete the appropriate Alias.
3. Automatic Backup. If you have already set up items to be backed
up, then in your scheduling program, select "Automatic Backup" to
run whenever you wish. There are many shareware and freeware
scheduling programs on the market such as "T-Minus Ten" and "Cron".
SECURITY PRECAUTION FOR AUTOMATED REMOTE BACKUPS
"AUTOMATIC BACKUP" BYPASSES THE TRADINGPOST
PASSWORD TO MOUNT THE REMOTE DISK. IF YOU ARE
UNSURE ABOUT THE SECURITY OF YOUR OWN COMPUTER,
THEN YOU SHOULD REMOVE "AUTOMATIC BACKUP" FROM
YOUR COMPUTER ENTIRELY.
b. Restore a Backup
1. First run "TradingPost" to mount your remote disk, then find your
backups in either the "Backups" folder on your remote disk, or in the
"Local Backups" folder on your computer.
2. Drag the icon (or icons) of any backed up file onto the program icon
"Restore Backup", or doubleclick and choose. The program will
restore the original file and place it in a folder called "Restored Items".
BUG REPORTING
In the unlikely event you run into a bug, report it to "Support@Highwinds.com".
Include the following in your report:
a. The program that you were attempting to run when the bug occurred.
b. The error message that appeared.
c. A description of events that preceded the bug event such as whether
you added or deleted or moved or edited any files or folders.
Known Bug (as of 3/1/00)
FullBack uses a suite of osaxen called “Akua Fork Sweets”. It is a
subset of the commercially available “Akua Sweets”. But the version
we are using is older, and it is not compatible with the new version.
So if any user has installed the current version of Akua Sweets, there
will be a problem that you will notice when you restore the original
file from the encrypted backup. We will try to fix this with the next
